More than just a charming coastal town...

St. Augustine, Florida, is more than just a charming coastal town—it’s the oldest continuously inhabited European-established city in the United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, St. Augustine has a rich, multilayered history that still defines its character today.

Founded in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the United States. Its story began in 1513 when Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León arrived in Florida. More than 50 years later, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés established St. Augustine on September 8, 1565, beginning a rich history that spans more than 460 years.

As the capital of Spanish Florida, St. Augustine became an important military and trading outpost. To protect the city from foreign attacks, the Spanish built the Castillo de San Marcos, a remarkable stone fortress completed in 1695 that still stands today. Over the centuries, the city passed from Spanish to British control, returned to Spain, and finally became part of the United States in 1821.

In the late 1800s, railroad pioneer Henry Flagler transformed St. Augustine into a luxurious winter destination, building grand hotels including the Ponce de León Hotel, now home to Flagler College. The city later played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement, with historic demonstrations in 1964 helping bring national attention to the fight for equality.

Today, St. Augustine blends centuries of history with coastal charm. Visitors can stroll along historic St. George Street, explore Spanish architecture, visit famous landmarks, and enjoy beautiful beaches, local restaurants, and unique shops. From its cobblestone-style streets to its waterfront views, St. Augustine offers a memorable experience where history comes alive.

St. Augustine is more than just a city—it’s a time capsule, a cultural landmark, and a coastal treasure. Its stories are carved into ancient walls, echoed in the architecture, and passed down by the people who call it home. Whether you’re visiting or relocating, you’re joining a legacy that spans more than four centuries—and continues to grow every day.
